Sleep Apnea

Take Back the Night

While snoring may seem like a fairly trivial problem, it is also the most common sign of a serious health condition. Left untreated, sleep apnea can affect your quality of life and significantly increase your risk of developing other serious health problems including heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. The most common sleep apnea treatment is a CPAP machine, but many patients find CPAPs intolerable. Thankfully, your Spokane dentist at DeFelice Dentistry has a non-invasive, affordable, comfortable solution for you with oral appliance therapy.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common and dangerous health condition that affects millions of people, with an estimated 90% of cases remaining undiagnosed. There are several different types of sleep apnea, but the one your dentist can help you with is called obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA.

OSA occurs when the soft tissues in the back of the throat collapse during sleep, preventing the sufferer from breathing properly, if at all. Sleep apnea is characterized by loud, frequent snoring, and moments where breathing stops entirely, following by choking or gasping for air.

A lack of oxygen night after night causes low blood oxygen levels, which can significantly increase your risk for serious cardiovascular complications.

Signs & Symptoms

Most of the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea occur during sleep, which is why it often requires a partner or family member to recognize the problem.

  • Loud, frequent snoring
  • Sleeping & breathing disruptions
  • Choking or gasping for air
  • TMJ & bruxism (teeth grinding & clenching)
  • Frequent urination
  • Morning dry mouth
  • Morning headaches
  • Chronic headaches & migraines
  • Depression & anxiety
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Nightmares or insomnia

Causes & Risk Factors

There are several demographic and lifestyle factors that can increase your risk of developing OSA.

  • Excessive weight or obesity
  • Over age 40
  • Male gender
  • Use of alcohol or sedatives
  • Large neck
  • Narrow airway

Health Consequences

Left untreated, sleep apnea can significantly increase your risk of developing other serious, potentially fatal health problems. Patients with sleep apnea also develop a higher risk of work-related and auto accidents caused by a lack of sleep.

  • Cardiovascular disease (heart disease)
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Low blood oxygen
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Obesity
  • Asthma
  • Acid reflux

Sleep Apnea Treatment

While the “gold standard” for sleep apnea treatment is still considered the CPAP machine, many patients find the device intolerable. CPAPs require you to wear an oxygen mask and be hooked up to a machine while you sleep. Most people find CPAPs too invasive, loud, bulky, and uncomfortable to find restful sleep, which kind of defeats the purpose, right?

Thankfully, your Spokane dentist has a fantastic alternative with oral appliance therapy. There’s no machine so you don’t need an electrical outlet – you can sleep wherever you need to! Oral appliance therapy uses a small device (oral appliance) that you wear like a mouth guard during sleep. The device is custom-made to fit your individual needs.

Sleep appliances gently shift the lower jaw forward, preventing the airway from collapsing and allowing you to breathe comfortably throughout the night. Depending on your needs, some appliances are designed to hold the tongue in its proper position, if it’s the tongue falling back into the throat that’s causing your obstruction.

At DeFelice Dentistry, sleep apnea treatment is easy, comfortable, affordable, and highly effective! Our appliances are medical grade, BPA free, and custom made to fit your individual needs comfortably. A simple oral appliance can restore the peace in your home, and allow you to finally find the restful sleep you deserve tonight, for a happier, healthier tomorrow.
